Los Quetzales National Park

Los Quetzales National Park was established on April 25th, 2006; but was officially opened on July 09th, and it covers an extension of 4.117.09 hectares that encompass three types of rainforest and 14 ecosystems.

The National Park Range Headquarter and main entrance to the PArk is at the 76.5 km and the scheduled is from 7:30 Am to 3:30 PM.

The park was created thanks to financial support from the Spanish Agency of International Development Cooperation (AECID- abbr. in Spanish), through the Araucaria Program, aiming to protect and conserve natural resources in the upper basin of the Rio Saavegre.

This protected area is located in the Pacific Slode side from the Talamanca Mountain Range 75 kilometers south of San Jose city crossing Cartago City. Access via South Interamerican Road.

Los Quetzales National Park exuberant nature reaches its full splendor in mountain cloud forests or oak as well as in dwarf forests of height and moor.

There are two seasons very well established. Dry season from December to April and a wet season from May to November with an outbreak of rain of 4667 mm. Very humid weather with temperatures from 0ºC to 20º C are predominant in the area. Rivers such as Parrita, Naranjo, Savegre and Humo born inside the protected area and all them flow in the Pacific Ocean.

Inside the Los Quetzales National PArk you will find four different trails. Two of them ( Ojo de Agua and Camino a Providencia ) are ideal for birdwatching in the middle of an oakwood forest. The other two trails ( Aventura and Rio Frio ) are for hard conditions and you will need in between 5 to 7 hours to cover them.

In these ecosystems inhabited by a large number of species of flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the Talamanca area. Of the birds, perhaps the most outstanding for its beauty is the Quetzal, a distinctly Mesoamerican species considered “near threatened” by the World Conservation Union. You can also find hummingbirds, goldfinches and others. Mammals will include tapirs, peccaries and pumas.
